Welcome to the St Mary’s Historical Society of Metchosin.

This website is under construction as the Society prepares to assume responsibility for the historic St. Mary the Virgin Church, Parish Hall, and cemetery at 4354 Metchosin Road. For more than 150 years, this remarkable place has been part of the story of Metchosin. The church was made possible through the generosity, vision, and labour of local people, and has been cared for through generations of the Anglican community. Today, the St. Mary’s Historical Society of Metchosin is being established to help preserve this heritage and ensure that the church, hall, cemetery, and grounds continue to have a meaningful place in the life of the wider community.

History

Governor Sir James Douglas and settler John Witty's handshake in 1870 birthed a legacy. Their church, consecrated in October 1873, became Metchosin's spiritual heart for 150 years. Each spring, lilies bloom—nature's reminder of renewal. Now, as the Diocese returns this cherished heritage to the community, its story continues.

Why Join the Society

Your community. Your voice. Own a piece of Metchosin's heritage. Shape how the church hall evolves, how the forested grounds welcome gatherings, how this sacred place renews without losing its soul. A protective covenant guards the cemetery and historic church—renewal is welcome, development is not. Join the Society.

How Will It Work

The St Marys Historical Society is now formed and registered. The Diocese transfers the property to this charitable trust—preserving the church and graveyard for your community. Together, we're protecting Metchosin's heritage.Charitable status and property transfer coming by end of 2026.
