Being owned by the community means that the people of Metchosin can have a role in managing and preserving the Heritage Church and, as importantly the property surrounding it.
There are ways to manage the uses on the St Mary’s property for the people of Metchosin’s benefit without developing the site or changing it’s historic nature. For example: at least part of the church hall requires demolition, but afterwards perhaps a new hall could be built? Or maybe the area could be used as a community meeting place adjoining the forested area? Or maybe something else entirely. A restrictive covenant on the deed protects the historic cemetery and church and includes a prohibition on re-development. But the covenant does not prohibit renewal.
Becoming a member of the St Marys Metchosin Historical Society allows you say in what happens to this historical property.
